DERA - Defence Evaluation and Research Agency

This is an agency of the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), incorporating the bulk of the MoD’s non-nuclear research, technology and test and evaluation establishments. It is one of Europe’s largest research organisations with a turnover of approximately £1 billion and about 12,000 staff.

DES - Data Encryption Standard

DES was created in the nineteen seventies by IBM in association with the NSA (National Security Agency). It was based on Horst Feistel's ideas and used a 64bit block cipher and a 64bit cipher key. This standard was adopted as the FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard) and used extensively by the US Government. Unfortunately the short key length and other weaknesses in the algorithm proved the standard to be weak, and much work has been done to improve its robustness. DES has now evolved into TDES (Triple DES) which provides a higher level of protection to data.

DFN - Deutsches ForschungsNetz

DFS - Distributed File System

DGRA - Data Grid Reference Architecture (Foster, Kesselman, Tueke)

DH - Diffie Hellman Key Exchange

The Diffie-Hellman key agreement protocol allows two users to exchange a secret key over an insecure medium without any prior secrets.

DHCP - Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol

DHTML - Dynamic HTML

DIB - Directory Information Base (X.500, LDAP)

DIT - Directory Information Tree (X.500, LDAP)

DN - Distinguished Name (X.500, LDAP)

DNS - Domain Name Service

DOM - Document Object Model (XML parser)

DPSS - Distributed Parallel Storage System

A scalable, high-performance, distributed-parallel data storage system orginally developed as part of the DARPA. Focuses on high pergformance access and utilises parallel data transfer, striping.

DRO - Data Replication Option (Objectivity)

DSA - Directory Server (X.500, LDAP)

DSA - Digital Signature Algorithm

The DSA was developed by NSA (National Security Association) so that certificates and other information could be signed using the senders private key.

DSS - Digital Signature Standard

DSS is the framework laid out by NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) for the signing of data prior to transfer. The standard promotes the use of the DSA (Digital Signature Algorithm) public-key algorithm and the SHA-1 hash algorithm.

DSE - DSA-Specific Entry (X.500, LDAP)

DSS- Digital Signature Standard

DSS (Digital Signature Standard) is the framework laid out by NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) for the signing of data prior to transfer. The standard promotes the use of the DSA (Digital Signature Algorithm) public-key algorithm and the SHA-1 hash algorithm.

DTD - Document Type Definition (XML)

DTF - Distributed Terascale Facility (NSF)

DTI - Department of Trade and Industry

This is the UK Government Department responsible for policy in trade, industry and scientific research. The aim of the DTI is to increase UK competitiveness and scientific excellence, generating sustainable growth, good jobs, opportunities and enhanced quality of life for all. DTI is the parent Department of the Office of Science and Technology, which in turn is responsible for EPSRC and the other UK research councils.
