HEFCs - Higher Education Funding Councils

The HEFCs were established in 1992 as non-departmental public bodies operating within the context of Government policy. Their main function is to distribute funds provided by the Department of Education and Employment for UK universities and higher education colleges. There are three regional HEFCs, the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council (SHEFC) and the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW). Universities in Northern Ireland receive funding from the Department of Education Northern Ireland (DENI).
